Gschlafe hei mir ar Romanos Beach bi Petrochori. Agluegt hei mir d Voidokilia Beach, e halbmondförmigi Bucht miteme schöne Sandstrand und Düne rund ume. Am schönschte isch dr Blick uf dä Sandstrand vo obe gsi.

Since our last post some time has passed and we have gained wonderful and precious experiences meanwhile and mean to tell you about them.

We took some time to discover the bay of Pylos. Looking at a map of that region one can see that the landscape around Gialova Lagoona offers a lot to discover. We camped at Romanos Beach in Petrochori. We visited Beach Voidokilia, formed like a half-moon, surrounded by dunes. The nicest view of that shore was from above.

On the hike to the hill above Beach Voidokilia we discovered Nestor's cave and the ruins of Nauarinou castle. In the cave we found shelter from the rain.

From up here we could even see our camp - after zooming a lot.

Weather changes were happening all the time and suddenly a rainbow appeared, our camp located pretty much at the end of the rainbow.

On our way back along Gialova Lagoon we discovered some flamingos.

During one week heavy rain was falling now and then, but no day passed without the sun showing up, even if sometimes just for sunset.

Nach dr Flamingo-Bucht hei mir üs z alte Messenia agluegt. Oder immerhin was me so gseht vo usse. Düre Lockdown si die archäologische Stätte leider aui zue.

After the flamingo lagoona we drove to ancient Messenia. We looked at what we could see of the ruins from outside. Due to lockdown the archealogical sites are all closed.

E wunderschöne Vollmond heimer dörfe beobachte.

We could observe a beautiful full moon.

Our Swiss friends from Graubünden, Gennara and Fritz met a greek farmer close to Gythios and were spontaneously invited for dinner. They liked the people and region so much that they decided to stay for a while and help out on the olive field. They talked so passionately about their experiences thats we decided to pay a visit to the villages Kokkina Louria and Melisa.

The region is beautiful, in the background always snowcovered Profitis Ilias and lots of flowers in bloom already. Temperatures on a sunny day feel like a nice day in May or June in Switzerland. On extensive walks we got to know the region, a nice panorama everywhere we went.

Joining Gennara, Fritz and their young dog Mia we visited a beautiful cave with a water source inside.

Mir probiere feins Brot, deftige Feta-Chäs, Olive vom Fäud wo mir gad druffe si, Souvlaki vom Füürofe, Zyparo und und und. Über aues chunnt e guete Gutsch Oliveöl. Derwile nutzt dr Vasilis d Glägeheit, sis Änglisch z üebe. Mir merke dass är viu z verzeue het wo ihm teilwys aber o d Wort derfür fähle. Mängisch wüu ärs uf Änglisch nid weiss u mängisch o wüus ke passendi Übersetzig het. Aber schnäu philosophiere mir über aues mügliche mitenang. Er seit üs sofort, mir söue üs verhaute aus wärs üses Huus. Entsprächend kassiert dr Tawan e Zämäschiss (mit Ougezwinkere) wo z Füür im Ofe usgeit «I told you behave as if it were your home – so why didn’t you take care of the fire?”. Ganz bezouberet vo dere riesige Gaschtfründschaft zie mir irgendwenn uf üsem Spaziergang wyter. Mir näme nid nume e Buuch vou feinem Ässe mit, sondern o d Erkenntniss dass so spontani Gastfründschaft öppis wunderbars isch wo mir unbedingt o mit uf üse wyter Läbeswäg wei näh. Ganz speziell dassme fürne spontani Iladig nid unbedingt es putzts Huus und z perfekte Zvieri parat ha muess.

Gschichte vo spontaner Gastfründschaft und ungfragte Gschänk ghöre mir o immer wieder mau vo anderne Reisende. D Grieche chöme gärn mau miteme Sack Orange aus Gschänk verbi oder mä muess ar Tankstell e Momänt warte wüu dr Tankwart im Garte no geit ga Gwürz abschniede aus Gschänk für ufe Wäg.

One day we were on a hike with Freddy and Mia when suddenly a greek guy drove up behind us with his old Fiat and calls something we couldn't really understand. He wants to urgently tell us something and immediately we ask ourselves if we are in a place we shouldnt be in. I ask him if he speaks English and then he says 'Yes. Come up to my cave. Have coffee and snacks. Why not?'

He is pointing to a small house in the middle of an olive field. A situation completely new to us Swiss, but we happily accept the warm invitation. Our host presents himself as 'Vasilis'. He puts so many different dishes and drinks onnrhe table, within 5 minutes its amounting to a buffet and we are ready to dig in. We enjoy bread, strong Feta, olives from his field, souvlaki from the oven, Tsipouro (greek wine) etc. Over everything a good amount of olive oil. Vasilis takes the chance to practice his English with us. We realize that he has lots of things to talk about though sometimes he can't quite make himself understood. Sometimes because he doesnt know the english expression and sometimes because there is no fitting translation. Soon we are talking about all kinds of things, exchanging philiosophies.

Directly at the beginning he tells us to behave as if we were at home. When the fire extinguishes Tawan is scolded for not looking after it, he reminds us with a smile that he told us to behave as if we were at home, so why didnt you take care of the fire?

Spellbound because of the hospitality we walk on on our hike.

Not only do we take a belly full of delicious food with us but also the insight that spontaneous hospitality is something wondeful we don't want to forget for our life. Especially that for a spontaneous invitation it is not mandatory to have a prefectly tidy home with a precooked meal ready.

Stories of greek hospitality and spontaneous presents are also told by other travellers we met. Greek people enjoy dropping by campers with a bag of fresh oranges as a present. Or people were also stopped when filling up fuel by the petrol station attendant for him to go get some spices from the garden as a present.

Im Winter und Früehlig chöme sie aber es paar Wuche nach Kokkina Louria zum Pflege vom Olivefäud. Im November/Dezember wärde d Olive pflückt und im Februar/März wird z Fäud für z nächschte Jahr vorbereitet. Mir häufe so guet mir chöi mit entferne vo Triibe am Oliveboumstamm. Di abbrochene Äscht wärde teils ufeme grosse Füür verbrönnt, teils ufem Fäud verteilt zum verrotte (i Zuekunft wird z Füür dürne Häcksler abglöst wärde). Z Fäud isch ungloublich steil, d Arbeit schwär. Vereifacht wird dr Zuegang zu de Böim dürne Wäg wo ersch dises Jahr isch gmacht worde. I de vordere Jahr het dr Manolis die grosse Oliveseck à je 30 kg vo Hand dürs Fäud abe treit. Itz chunnt immerhin e Traktor id Nöchi vo de Böim.

Of course we also took the chance to go and work on the olive field for 2 days. The greek farmer our friends met here is called Manolis, his wife Molly. Two young and very warm people. Most part of the year they live on an island called Kythnos where they farm some fields and own some sheep and chickens. During winter and spring they spend some time here in Kokkina Louria to tend to their oljve field. During November and December they pick the olives and from February to March the field is prepared for the coming season. We help as much as we can by removing sidebranches from the tree trunk. 

The branches are then partly burned on a big fire and partly distributed on parts of the land. In the future the fire will be replaced by a shredder. The field is incredibly steep, the labour intensive. The access to the trees is made easier by a way leveled only this year. During the preceding years Manolis carried the bags of olives weighing 30 kg each on his back. Now at least a tractor can get in close proximity to the trees.

O bim Manolis und dr Molly erläbe mir wieder ungloublichi Gastfründschaft. Mir wärde immer wieder zum Znacht iglade, feini griechischi Gricht wärde direkt näbem Füür gässe. Z eifache Hüsli het wahnsinnig viu Charm, z Füür git sehr warm.

Manolis and Molly also show us great hospitality. Two times we are invited for dinner and enjoy greek dishes next to the warming fire. The simple constructed house has much charm and feels cosy.

Amene Tag wo dr Manolis u d Molly mau frei macht gö mir zämä ufene Spaziergang und mache es Picknick mit Grilliere. Mir chöi o mau öppis Neus biete in Form vo Schlangebrot.

On their day off Manolis and Molly go on a hike with us and we enjoy picknick with a fire and some barbecue. Finally we can also introduce something new: barbecue-bread.

Another day we enjoy a very fresh bath in a small river. Its very cold, after some seconds in the water you can feel the cold in your bones.

Damit niemer e Dolch cha ine stosse i dä Durchgang ischer sogar boge. The place once was the border between Greece and Turkey. The house in the background used to be heavily armed and when greek merchanders wantes to sell their goods in Turkey they had to pay a customs fee. The money had to be handed over through a very small opening in the wall, which was even bent so that nobody could stab the officers from outside. We can still see the openings where canons were placed, but today the house is only home to spiders and plants.

Manolis is finally able to tell me what kind of trees are so nicely in bloom this time of year already: almonds.

Dr Manolis übersetzt «är söu sich nid bedanke, är söu meh Orange näh, lue die lige ja scho am Bode und verrotte». Wo sich de dr Fritz am Zitronebou nöcheret händlet d Muetter no einisch ume. Dr Manolis übersetzt «nume 1 Zitrone, die si sehr wärtvoll, die chame lagere».

Tawan and Fritz also went to help out at another farmer, they loaded wood on a truck. As a thank you both were allowed to pick a bag of oranges from a tree in the garden of the farmers mother. When Tawan had a fairly full bag he said Thank you in greek to the mother "Efkaristo". She took her stick and hit on the bag of oranges and then pointed to the tree. Manolis translated: "Don't say thank you, take more. Look, we good so many oranges they are already rotting on the floor". So they picked more oranges. But when Fritz approached the lemon tree the mother once more called out. Manolis translated: "only 1 lemon, they are precious because we can store them."

Chürzlich hani bim Zahnarzt fürne kompletti Konsultation mit Röntge und gründlicher Dentalhygiene während 45 Minute 40 Euro zaut. Ufem Gmüesmärit bechunnt mä es Kilo Gurke für 1 Euro, e Sack vou Zwiebele choschtet mängisch weniger aus 1 Euro. 5 Kilo Orange choschte aube öppe 5 Euro. Dr Mindestlohn in Griecheland ligt bi 600 Euro. Wär aber gäge d Lockdownregle verstosst und verwütscht wird muess aus Straf 300 Euro zahle. 

Mit schwäre Härze näme mir Abschied vo au dene Erläbnis und Mönsche und zieh wyter. 

Prices for work and for goods are still surprising us sometimes. Farmers get 70 Euro for 1 ton of wood, still having to paying for transport themselves. Skilled workers on the olive field make 40 Euro during a day. Recently I went to the dentist and payed 40 Euro for an examination with x ray and thorough dental hygiene. On farmers market you get 1 kg of cucumbers for 1 Euro, a bag of onions is usually less than 1 Euro. 5 kg of fresh oranges costs around 5 Euros. Minimal salary in greece is around 600 Euro, but who is caught violating lockdown rules has to pay a fine of 300 Euro.

With a heavy heart we part from the lovely place and the warm people we met.

Ganz im südlichschte Spitz vor Westküste vom Peloponnes heimer üses absolute Lieblingsplätzli gfunde, direkt am Selitsa Strand. S isch hie so friedlich und einsam am Meer, d Umgäbig het schöni Spazierwäge. Üs gfauts hie so guet, dass mir bim erschte mau 3 Nächt blibe si und iz nach üsne Erläbnis in Kokkina nomau für meh aus ei Wuche (bis iz) hie häre cho si.

In the southernmost point of the west coast of Peloponnes we found our very favorite camp spot, Selitsa beach. Its very peaceful and lonely directly next to the sea, surrounded by beautiful walks. We like it so much that after an initial stay of 3 nights we return again after our time in Kokkina Louria to spend more than a week (up to now) here in paradise.

The second time we visites that lovely place we met up with our friends Lisa, David and Marley. Together we swam in the sea, enjoyed a fondue together, watched a film in our homecinema and went fishing (without success). On a nice day without wind the sea is even inviting us for a swim. It feels like Aare in summer, roughly 18-20°C.

We tried fishing - without any luck. An elderly man dropped by several times and caught eel with help of pieces of Calamari on a line and a spear which looked like a present from Poseidon personally.

With nothing but time on our hands we decided to wash our clothes by hand.

Sehr e strängi Arbeit u mir wüsse itz werums der Begriff «Wöschtag» git. Glohnt het sichs aber aui mau wime am bruune Wasser gseht.

A hard work and we now know why its called 'washing day'. But it payed out as you can see from the left over brown water.

Ganz flissig mitghoufe het natürlich o dr Freddy...

Während em tröchne vor Wösch si leider riesigi Wälle uftoucht und d Luft isch vou mit Salzwasser-Tröpfli. Itz schmöckt üsi Wösch zwar sehr früsch, aber o e chli salzig.

While the fresh laundry was hanging to dry huge waves appeared out of nowhere and the air got saturated with salt. Now we got laundry smelling nicely and tasting a little salty.

Wüu mir hie am Selitsa Strand e langi Zyt stöh heimer üs sogar es «WC» boue. Natürlich miteme schön töife Loch wo mir am Schluss zuegrabe.

 Because we stay for a longer time on this lonely beach we built ourselves a 'toilet'. Of course with a very deep hole we can cover with earth in the end.

The vista is not bad.

Geschter Abe hetme plötzlich ghört dass öppis i de Büsch unterwägs isch und da stöh doch plötzlich zwöi Schakale ufem Steistrand direkt vor üsem Lager, öppe 5 Meter wyt wäg. Dr eint het der ander gjagt und wo si de plötzlich üs gseh hei si sie no meh erchlüpft aus der Freddy. O we mit fiume viu z spät si gsi heimer doch dr eint Schakal bim dervospringe no verwütscht.

Yesterday evening we heard something running through the bushes and suddenly two jackals stood on the beach directly in front of our camp, roughly 5 meters away. One was chasing the other and when they saw us they were more starteled than Freddy. Even though we started filming way too late we were able to capture one while running away.

Now we enjoy our fires, bread on fire and chocolate-banana before we very slowly drive on in direction of Turkey.
